If you have been thinking about freshening up the look of your home, something you may want to consider is hiring painters. Whether you have one room that you would like to brighten up, or an exterior you want to give a whole new colour palette to, hiring someone to help with your next redecorating project is a great idea. When taking this into consideration, something you may be wondering is: how much does home painting cost? And that question is important to know when it comes time to budget, so we are going to be talking about how much it costs to hire painters, and how exactly that cost is broken down.
There are several different factors involved when it comes to determining the price of your paint job, a painting company will take into consideration: the square footage of the area(s) being painted, the cost of materials, labour, whether or not the area(s) require primer, and any repairs that need to be made to the walls/trim/doorways/window sills/etc. If you are painting the exterior of your home, that list expands, as the painters will then have to account for additional equipment such as scaffolding, ladders, pressure washers, sprayers, and whether or not there is any intricate trim that will have to be painted by hand.
When it comes to painting the interior of your home, the cost per square foot averages around $2.00-$4.50, and for painting the exterior, the cost per square foot can run you between $2.50-$5.50. With this in mind, if you were working with 2000 square feet, you could expect to pay $2000-$7000 for an interior paint job, or $3000-$9000 for an exterior paint job. This variation in price is due to the change in complexity between painting the inside and outside of your home, the exterior typically being more ornate and requiring finer attention to detail, compared to the interior, where the shape, angle, and texture of the walls do not vary by much.
The cost difference is also determined by how much prep work must be done to the property, what type of finish you want your paint to have (matte, semi-gloss, high-gloss, etc., as prices per gallon can vary from $15-$60 depending on the finish), along with any repairs that need to be completed before painting can begin.
If you are intimidated by the amount it takes to hire professional painters, do not worry, there are some things that do lower the cost a little. For example: an empty home would be cheaper to paint than one that is already being lived in, as the empty home would require less prep work, as there is no furniture to move or cover, thus saving you a little on labour. You can also sometimes skip having to pay for primer if the colour you are about to apply is not far off from the current one. Tackling some of the prep work yourself may also be a good idea, such as power washing your home’s exterior, and removing any debris or furniture that may get in the way of your painting crew.
